A team of researchers have made a huge discovery in their search for the cause of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), which has become a more prevalent and pervasive food allergic condition. Nature Genetics published online the study team’s findings for what it describes as “a chronic inflammatory disorder associated with allergic hypersensitivity to food.” The cause for EoE up until this point has been a complex and gray area. These findings are a wonderful first step toward answers for the many families who are suffering from this debilitating and confusing condition.

Our Thanksgiving celebration was extra special this year with a visit from Grandpa and Grandma Pumpkin, who helped make sure all foods served at the Thanksgiving table were free of dairy, egg, nuts, corn and apple. From papa’s smoked turkey and grandma’s delicious stuffing to the yummy pumpkin chocolate-chip cookies pictured here, everyone at the table was deliciously full by the meal’s end.

Kids With Food Allergies Foundation (KFA) recently posted that there are now four different epinephrine auto-injector devices on the market. What does this mean for me, a parent whose child has life-threatening food allergies? It means a few things. But most importantly, it means I need to educate and train myself on using the auto-injectors now, so I’m prepared and can respond promptly if my son or another child has a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction. It also means I need to make sure that, in addition to family and friends, my son’s teachers know how to use his epinephrine auto-injector device. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center posts an announcement that is sure to thrill the food allergy community: A little boy, Will Fountain, “beat” not one, but two of his food allergies. According to the article, penned by Fountain, after participating in separate egg and peanut allergy studies under the care of Dr. Robert A. Wood and his team at Hopkins, he can now safely eat egg and peanut. Moreover, Dr. Wood thinks he “may be the first person in the world to have been cured of two food allergies.”

I hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend. As the sun started to set on Sunday and the kids were settling down for the evening, I started thinking about family and traditions.
