With back-to-school season upon us, food allergy mamas like me are in full swing getting supplies but also safe snacks for our kiddos. Many schools are now nut-free, which means the snacks we send in must be nut-free too. So when Snyder’s of Hanover reached out to me to review their pretzels, their MADE IN A PEANUT-FREE FACILITY absolutely caught my eye! I’m thrilled to share with you all my latest foodie find: Oreo Candies! As a food allergy mama who avoids dairy, egg and nut, there really isn’t much candy in our household. But don’t get me wrong; we DO love incorporating Enjoy Life chocolate chips and chunks into most of our baking recipes! I recently reviewed a cool, super cute cookbook for Fancy Shanty entitled Kids’ Treats by fellow mama Katie Wyllie. To my delight, many of her 50 cute snack recipes revolved around…wait for it…OREOS! So of course, I made my own dairy-, egg- and nut-free version of her Oreo bon-bon for our enjoyment!

While cooking and making new recipes doesn’t exactly come naturally to me, managing food allergies and coming up with allergen-free recipe substitutions has slowly transformed me into a better cook and baker. Now, on any given weekend, you can probably find me in the kitchen transforming a cookie, cake or bread recipe into something that is yummy and safe for my family. (I love coming up with my own desserts now!) My husband, on the other hand, is a natural in the kitchen. He often whips up soups, chili and pretty much every homemade dinner we eat. To start, I would categorize Debbie Adler as a food-allergy baking powerhouse. Not only does she run a bakery that serves safe treats for those with the top food allergies, celiac disease and diabetes, but her writing is wildly humorous, fun and more eloquent than any other cookbook I have met.

My mother-in-law has one recipe that is jealously guarded by granddad and coveted by her kids: her famous orange blossoms. After enjoying them over the holidays with us, she has finally agreed to share her secrets! The recipe, changed to account for our allergies to dairy and egg, was given to her 35 years ago by a colleague. She said she has been making them for the Christmas holidays ever since.

Our Thanksgiving celebration this year was amazing not only because of our wonderful family members seated at the table, but also for our delicious meal that was free of dairy, egg, nuts, corn and apple–our combined food allergens. My favorite was her stuffing. Made with our dairy- and egg-free homemade bread and her chicken stock from scratch, it was mouth-watering to say the least. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we do!

Our Thanksgiving celebration was extra special this year with a visit from Grandpa and Grandma Pumpkin, who helped make sure all foods served at the Thanksgiving table were free of dairy, egg, nuts, corn and apple. From papa’s smoked turkey and grandma’s delicious stuffing to the yummy pumpkin chocolate-chip cookies pictured here, everyone at the table was deliciously full by the meal’s end.

I hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend. As the sun started to set on Sunday and the kids were settling down for the evening, I started thinking about family and traditions. While we often make our own dairy-free oatmeal sugar cookies, we do have what I call our “quick mix-fix” brand that is free of the top eight allergens and, frankly, absolutely delicious. You just add dairy-free margarine and your choice of milk, and in a few minutes, voila! You have a safe, mouth-watering treat that even my mother-in-law finds delicious! So as the summer approaches and you have visitors who are in need of a quick, safe alternative to your regular go-to treat, just pop this in the oven and you will be a hit!
