I’m thrilled to share with you all my latest foodie find: the Chocolate Oreo Bonbon. As a food allergy mama who avoids dairy, egg and nut, there really isn’t much candy in our household. But don’t get me wrong; we DO love incorporating Enjoy Life chocolate chips and chunks into most of our baking recipes!
I recently reviewed a cool, super cute cookbook for Fancy Shanty entitled Kids’ Treats by fellow mama Katie Wyllie. To my delight, many of her 50 cute snack recipes revolved around…wait for it…OREOS!
Now for any mamas out there who aren’t managing food allergies or just don’t know, the golden, original and Double Stuf Oreo cookies (and I’m sure other flavors) are not made of milk or egg! Yep. That’s right. They are one of our fun go-to snacks on the go.
(According to SnackSafely.com, the original and Double Stuf Oreos–which happen to be Katie’s faves and mine–are safe for those with nut allergies. And those happen to be the ones that are perfect for this recipe!)
Oreo Bonbons? Yes, please!
So yes, Wyllie’s “Basic Oreo Bonbon” recipe does contain dairy. She uses chocolate melts that obviously wouldn’t be safe for us. But with her permission, I’m going to share our dairy-free version of her delicious chocolate Oreo candy that is hands-down, without a doubt, absolutely fantastic–and super easy.
Seriously mamas, I can’t believe how easy her recipe is, and how easy it is to make them safe for my family. It might just be our food allergy-friendly foodie find of the year!
To say that our dairy- and egg-free version of Wyllie’s Basic Oreo Bonbon is one of our favorite safe treats is an understatement.
Wyllie uses chocolate melts to coat her Oreos. For our own dairy-, egg- and nut-free free version, I substitute in Daiya dairy-free cream cheese, Enjoy Life chocolate chunks or chocolate chips, and Earth Balance dairy- and soy-free margarine.
Allergy-Friendly Oreo Candy Ingredients
1/2 package of Original Oreo cookies
1/2 container of Daiya strawberry cream cheese
1/2 cup of Earth Balance dairy- and soy-free margarine
1/2 package of Enjoy Life chocolate chips or chunks
Another great perk is that this recipe is so easy, the kids can do it–and there’s no baking!
The kids literally threw the Oreos in a food processor. Then we mixed in the cream cheese, let it firm up in the fridge for about a half hour, dipped the bonbons in our melted chocolate and margarine mixture, let them firm up some more, and voila!
Now if you want to get a bit more creative, Wyllie offers numerous cute variations, such as Oreo crabs, frogs, turtles, pirates, monkeys, puppies and more!
Whichever Oreo candy you make, these treats are sure to be chocolate bonbon heaven for all!
